The Education Foundation
Brief History of the Education Foundation of Rho Eta Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.
The Rho Eta Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. established its Education Foundation in February 2005. The Education Foundation is the non-profit 501 (c)(3) charitable arm of the Fraternity.
One of the primary focuses of the Foundation is scholarships. We began in 2001 by offering a book scholarship of $300 to a deserving youth of Madison County. In an effort to offer more and also get the community involved in our programs, the Thurgood Marshall Oratorical Scholarship Luncheon was developed in 2002.
In 2007, we were particularly excited because of the approval of our 501 (c) (3) status which enabled us to more effectively solicit corporate sponsorships. This addition aided tremendously in increasing our offerings as well as helped us expand our programs. Through the Education Foundation we have offered Tutoring at the elementary, middle and high schools throughout the North Alabama area in the cities of Madison and Decatur. We have developed seminars on leadership development, study skills improvement, test taking strategies, and college admission tips.
Since that initial year, scholarships are awarded annually through our oratorical contest. The contest is open to all graduating college-bound students in the Madison, Morgan, and Limestone Counties of Alabama. The contest requires all participants to compose an essay on a given topic and to orally present that essay to a public audience. Over the years through the Luncheon, we have increased our offerings to over $2000 per luncheon. Over the past 23 years of hosting this event the Foundation has awarded over $40,000 in scholarships to over 40 college bound high school students. Additionally, Scholarships are awarded based on academic ability and financial need.
Finally, the foundation has also provided funds to: March of Dimes, North Alabama Sickle Cell Foundation, Martin Luther King, Jr., National Memorial Foundation and many other 501 (c) (3) organizations just to name a few.
We appreciate you being here today in consideration of your support for this worthy opportunity.

March of Dimes
Alpha Phi Alpha – Rho Eta Lambda Supports March for Babies
We’ve formed our March for Babies team to raise money to help all babies be born healthy. Please join us in this important endeavor. Simply sign up from this page.
The money we raise helps fund research to find out why premature birth happens and what can be done to prevent it. Premature birth is the #1 cause of newborn death and the biggest threat to babies’ health today.
Can you think of anything more important than the health of our babies? If you can’t join us, please donate to our team from this page. It’s fast, easy and secure.
Thurgood Marshall Oratorical Luncheon
Every year we, the brothers of The Rho Eta Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc, are encouraged to put ourselves to work for our North Alabama service areas. Whether it’s adopting a stretch of road to keep clean, providing school supplies to elementary students or providing mentoring to young men through our “Go to High School, Go to College” and “Project Alpha” initiatives, we approach each task with the mindset of “First of All, Servants of All, We Shall Transcend All.” In the spirit of one of the aims of our fraternity, we host an annual scholarship event in the name of our dear fraternity brother and the first African American Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, the Late Honorable Thurgood Marshall.
